When Austin based Mezcal brand SUSTO asked us to help craft a web experience that helped to tell their story, we jumped at the chance. This was a great opportunity to combine storytelling with fantastic illustration and development, while helping to grow the SUSTO brand.
One of the main goals of the SUSTO site was to make the story a major part of the experience. To do this, we created a story that explains the legend of “Susto”. This story was then translated into a long scroll parallax experience on the homepage of the site. The idea is that the user first has the experience of the story, and then applies it’s meaning throughout the rest of the site and also every time they experience SUSTO out in the wild.
A major part of getting this experience right was nailing the illustration style. We worked with an amazing Mexican illustrator named Emilia Schettino. Her style fit perfectly with what we wanted to do, and she truly brought the story to life.
The merchandise section of the site helped to provide an extra stream of revenue.
Developing long-scroll parallax experience is not easy. There are a lot of moving parts—literally. It’s even harder to make these experiences fully responsive across any device. We are proud that the SUSTO site keeps the same experience, no matter where you’re viewing it.
We also created an HTML5-based location chooser which would automatically load the nearest locations where SUSTO is available. This would categorize by restaurant and retail locaitons.
