We don’t like to just write about work when there’s so many great things to do outside of work, too. Having lived here for more than 20 years, I’ve seen many of my favorite venues (Black Cat, White Rabbit, Liberty Lunch, the original backyard) come and go. And as more time passes and the city continues to grow, I'm sure there are some great newer venues that even I have not yet been to. But here, in no particular order, are my top 10 live music venues in Austin.

  1. Parish - One of the best smallish indoor venues, great combination of size and sound.
  2. Continental Club - The beauty of CC is that it is timeless.
  3. Threadgill's - Love the little outdoor stage, favorite place for music on a warm summer night.
  4. Saxon Pub - While it seems like S. Lamar was torn down and rebuilt, Saxon Pub continued to be great. Cozy. Love to see music here when it is cold out. Looks like the Saxon Pub will be moving to a different location on the south side St. Elmo district in 2017.
  5. Stubbs (Outside and In) - Always a good time at Stubbs.
  6. Cactus Cafe - A listening room on campus which makes it a fun place to go especially if you went to school at UT. Great for seeing singer/songwriter types.
  7. White Horse - Great place on the east side the has a cool country/hipster mix.
  8. The Historic Scoot Inn - Another east side venue. This one is outdoors and indoors, and a ton of fun.
  9. The Mohawk - Super cool outdoor stage, good intimate setting that has been around from quite some time.
  10. Moody Theatre - This is a place most people have been to since it seems like the venue these days for medium-to-larger acts. There truly is not a bad seat in the house here and the sound is incredible
