We're pretty lucky that we're in a city surrounded by so many great taco joints, dog lovers and amazing creative talent. Colin Mumbach has worked at places like T3 (The Think Tank) and is now Design Director here at Masonry.

Today, on the Masonry blog, we give Colin the rundown.

What college did you go to / what’s your degree in?

Lamar University in Beaumont Texas. I got my undergraduate degree in advertising communications, and my graduate degree in graphic design.

What first got you interested in design?

Growing up, I was always really into drawing and coloring and making things, so as I got older I began looking for a career that would allow me to utilize that skill set. I became interested in design when I realized that it’s all about influencing and guiding human behavior through visual aesthetics, and that felt like a really good fit for me.

What’s one of your favorite things about Austin / the Austin design scene?

It’s a very competitive industry here, so it attracts a lot of really talented people. There is awesome stuff to look at everywhere I go in this city.

What’s on your Top 5 movie list?

  • Interstellar
  • The Life Aquatic
  • The Empire Strikes Back
  • Ghostbusters
  • Jurassic Park

What would your dream project be?

A “from the ground-up” whisky or beer project would be awesome. Naming, identity and branding, packaging, website, distillery/brewery signage, wayfinding and wall graphics, promotional materials, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

What’s something you can’t help but spend money on?

Posters, for sure. I have an ever-growing collection under my bed that I hope to one day unearth and put up on my walls somewhere.

Best places to go for happy hour?

ABGB (although I don’t even know if they have happy hour specials. I just really like that place.)

The Abgb Austin Beer

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

That’s a tough one. It’d have to be some sort of smoothie that had all of the important proteins, vegetables, vitamins and minerals and stuff in it. Otherwise the rest of my life would be really short.

What’s something you have / will become accidentally famous for?

I once won a sweepstakes from PacSun for free jeans for a year and became pretty well-known amongst the employees of the local PacSun stores. My glorious 15 minutes of fame.

What’s on your top 5 book list?

  • The Ender Series
  • The Worthing Saga
  • Red Rising Trilogy
  • Paul Rand’s Thoughts on Design
  • A Visual History of Typefaces and Graphic Styles textbook

What is your favorite 90's jam?

Strawberry. NO WAIT, grape. NO, SORRY, Green Day’s “Basket Case”.

Favorite TV Show and why?

Flight of the Conchords, because it’s the BEST.

What career would you choose if you weren’t a Design Director?

Not quite sure, actually. Building furniture? Maybe cooking? I love what I do, so I don’t have much of a backup plan. I hope that’s not a bad idea.

Stick around to see more of Colin's work pop up in the near future!
